How Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Supports Recovery and Repair In Bigfork

Oxygen is the raw material your cells use to repair almost everything: muscle, skin, nerve tissue, blood vessels. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy gives the body more of it than it can get from normal air, which is why the treatment has moved from a niche medical tool into a mainstream recovery option. At Elysian Institute, we built our hyperbaric oxygen therapy program in Bigfork, MT, around evidence-informed care and individualized treatment.

What Happens Inside a Pressurized Oxygen Chamber?

Normal air is about 21% oxygen at sea-level pressure. Inside our chamber, clients breathe a higher concentration of oxygen while air pressure increases, up to 2.0 ATA, roughly equivalent to being 33 feet underwater. That pressure forces oxygen to dissolve directly into blood plasma, cerebrospinal fluid, and lymphatic fluid, reaching tissue starved of oxygen by injury, inflammation, or poor circulation.

Screening Before Your First Session

Our chamber is a hard-shelled, two-person unit, so that clients can bring a partner along. Because HBOT is one of the medical therapies at Elysian Institute that requires a full intake, our nurse practitioner screens every client before their first visit to confirm the therapy is appropriate for them.

How Extra Oxygen May Support Repair

Elevated blood oxygen may support several repair pathways: new blood vessel formation (angiogenesis), stem cell mobilization, and improved mitochondrial function, the cell’s energy-production system.

Peer-reviewed research has documented HBOT’s role in angiogenesis and wound healing for a defined set of medical conditions, while its use for general recovery and wellness remains an area of active, ongoing study rather than an approved indication. HBOT is not a substitute for medical treatment, and individual results vary.

Who Tends to Use It

Athletes managing a nagging injury, clients recovering from surgery, and people dealing with chronic inflammation are among those drawn to the therapy. If you’d like to see the space before booking, our recovery wellness center is located on Holt Drive in Bigfork.

What to Expect Before and After Your Session

You’ll change into a 100% cotton robe before entering the chamber, and we ask clients to skip lotions, perfumes, and electronics beforehand, since these can interfere with oxygen absorption or aren’t safe inside a pressurized environment. A registered nurse stays in the room for the full session, and appointments typically run 60 to 120 minutes, including time to pressurize and depressurize, depending on individual goals.

Getting Ready for Treatment

Eating a light meal beforehand and avoiding alcohol on the day of your session help most clients feel more comfortable throughout. Many people leave feeling refreshed; some notice mild ear pressure similar to a flight, which typically resolves quickly.

Is It Worth Adding to Your Routine?

Recovery goals differ from person to person: an old injury, a training plateau, or wanting your body to bounce back faster. If hyperbaric oxygen therapy sounds like a fit, it fits into the broader approach a professional recovery wellness center in Bigfork can offer.

Contact Elysian Institute at (406) 837-2550 or [email protected], and our team will help you figure out if it’s the right starting point.
