overview
What is PEMF Therapy?

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) Therapy uses low-frequency electromagnetic pulses to stimulate cellular activity, enhance circulation, and support natural healing. This non-invasive treatment helps the body restore balance, reduce inflammation, and optimize overall wellness.

PEMF
PEMF causes increased blood flow to the site of an injury by dilating the blood vessels that deliver oxygen to the damaged tissues. This increase in blood flow promotes wound healing and reduces inflammation. PEMF therapy also stimulates the production of nitric oxide, a vasodilator that improves blood flow.

Answers to the most frequently asked questions
During a PEMF session, you’ll relax either lying down or sitting comfortably while a special mat or device sends gentle magnetic pulses through your body. The session usually lasts between 20 to 30 minutes, and many clients say they feel more relaxed, less sore, or more energized afterward. You can wear comfortable clothing, and there’s no recovery time needed—you can go right back to your day.
You won’t feel any pain, some people feel a light pulsing or warmth, but most just feel calm or nothing at all.
PEMF therapy is safe for most people and can be used by those looking to support recovery, reduce pain, improve circulation, boost energy, or enhance overall wellness. It’s commonly used by athletes, people with joint or muscle pain, those with fatigue, and individuals seeking stress relief or faster healing.
However, PEMF is not recommended for people who:
- Have a pacemaker, implanted medical device or an insulin pump
- Are pregnant
- Have a seizure disorder or epilepsy
- Are currently undergoing active cancer treatment
If you’re unsure, we always recommend speaking with your healthcare provider before starting PEMF therapy. At Elysian Institute, our team will also review your health history to make sure it’s a safe fit for you.
No, you do not have to undress for a PEMF session. You’ll remain fully clothed the entire time. Just wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and avoid any large metal accessories like belts or jewelry near the treatment area. The magnetic pulses pass safely through your clothing, so there’s no need to change or disrobe—just relax and enjoy the session!
A typical PEMF session lasts between 20 to 40 minutes, depending on your wellness goals and the settings used. Some sessions may be shorter or longer based on your provider’s recommendation. There’s no downtime afterward—you can go right back to your normal activities feeling relaxed, recharged, or more balanced.
In most cases, PEMF therapy is safe for people with non-electronic metal implants, such as joint replacements, rods, screws, or dental fillings. The magnetic pulses used are gentle and non-thermal—they do not heat the metal or cause it to move.
However, PEMF is not recommended for individuals with electronic implants like pacemakers, defibrillators, or cochlear implants, as the magnetic fields could interfere with how those devices work.
If you have any kind of implant, please let our staff know during your intake so we can ensure your safety and adjust the treatment as needed.
To get the most out of your PEMF sessions, here are a few easy tips:
- Stay well-hydrated – Drink plenty of water before and after your session. PEMF can help with cellular repair and detox, so hydration supports those processes.
- Be consistent – Like exercise, PEMF works best when done regularly. Many people see the most benefit with 2–3 sessions per week, especially at the beginning.
- Pair it with other wellness therapies – PEMF works well alongside treatments like red-light therapy, IV therapy, or compression to support healing and recovery.
- Listen to your body – Everyone responds differently. You might feel more energized, relaxed, or notice better sleep or less pain over time. Track how you feel and let us know.
