overview
What is Red Light Therapy?

Red Light Therapy (RLT) is a non-invasive treatment that uses low-wavelength red light to penetrate the skin, stimulating cellular function and regeneration. By enhancing mitochondrial activity, this therapy helps rejuvenate skin, reduce inflammation, and accelerate healing—making it a popular choice for wellness and beauty.

the most frequently asked Red light Therapy questions
At Elysian Institute, most red light therapy sessions last 8 to 12 minutes. That’s typically all the time your body needs to soak in the light and start the healing process. You’ll just lie back and relax while the red and near-infrared light does its work. Some people may benefit from shorter or longer sessions depending on their goals, but our team will help guide you on the best timing for your needs.
Yes. Because Elysian Institute uses a full-body red light bed, eye protection is required during every session. The red and near-infrared lights are very bright and may cause discomfort or strain if your eyes are exposed for an extended period. We provide protective goggles to keep your eyes safe and ensure a comfortable experience. Please keep the goggles on throughout the session, even if your eyes are closed.
Red light and near-infrared (NIR) light are both used in our red light bed at the Elysian Institute, but they work at slightly different depths in your body:
- Red light (around 630–660 nm): This light is visible to the eye and mainly works on the surface of the skin. It helps with things like improving skin tone, reducing redness, and supporting collagen production.
- Near-infrared light (around 810–850 nm): This light is invisible to the naked eye and penetrates deeper into the body. It’s great for helping with muscle recovery, joint pain, inflammation, and boosting circulation at a deeper level.
Together, these two types of light create a powerful combo—supporting both surface-level skin benefits and deeper healing in tissues and muscles.
For best results, we recommend removing clothing during your red light bed session at the Elysian Institute. The light needs direct contact with your skin to be effective, and clothing can block or reduce how much light is absorbed. You’ll have complete privacy in your treatment room, and we provide clean towels and a robe for your comfort before and after the session. If you prefer to leave on undergarments, that’s okay—just know the areas covered won’t receive the full benefits.
Some medications can make your skin more sensitive to light, especially red and near-infrared light. These are called photosensitizing medications, and using red light therapy while taking them may increase the risk of skin irritation, redness, or sensitivity.
Common examples include:
- Certain antibiotics (like doxycycline)
- Retinoids (like Accutane or topical tretinoin)
- Some antidepressants
- Diuretics, NSAIDs, or chemotherapy agentsa
At the Elysian Institute, we’ll review your medications before starting any red light therapy to ensure it’s safe for you. Always let us know about any prescriptions, supplements, or topical products you’re using. If you’re unsure, we’re happy to check for you. Your safety is our top priority.
Results from red light therapy vary from person to person, depending on your goals and how often you use it. Some people notice improvements in skin tone, energy, or muscle recovery within just a few sessions. For others—especially those using it for inflammation, pain relief, or collagen support—it may take 2 to 4 weeks of consistent use to see noticeable changes. Think of red light therapy as a gentle, natural process that supports your body’s ability to heal and regenerate over time. At the Elysian Institute, we’ll help you create a schedule that fits your needs and maximizes your results.
